Torticollis is a congenital or acquired tilted head position and limited mobility of the cervical spine with hypertonic sternocleidomastoid muscle. With foot deformity and hip dislocation, torticollis is one of the three most common deformities a baby is born with. Congenital torticollis is classified according to clinical presentation into three types: muscular torticollis where neck deformity is associated with muscle tightness, osseous torticollis with postural deformity only in the neck and malpositioned torticollis. Acquired torticollis can result from a number of different diseases and conditions such as inflammation, injury, visual and hearing impairment, and some neurological and psychological conditions. There are several types of acquired torticollis such as ocular, auditory, desmogenic, paralytic, hysterical, traumatic, inflammatory and rheumatic torticollis. Torticollis requires early detection and treatment to prevent the effects of restricted neck movement and secondary musculoskeletal deformities, such as craniofacial asymmetry and scoliosis. Physiotherapy interventions include kinesitherapy, massage, thermotherapy, electrotherapy, orthoses, and Vojta therapy. It is of great importance to educate parents about the positioning of the child when sleeping, feeding, carrying and playing.
