This research study examines the prevalence of ankle sprains among athletes in the First Croatian Handball League (1. HRL) North and South, with a particular focus on the impact of various factors such as age, training frequency, preventive and rehabilitative measures, as well as factors influencing rehabilitation outcomes and recurrent injuries. The research shows that young handball players aged 18 to 21 are the most represented in the league, while older age does not significantly affect the frequency of injuries in the last two years. A higher number of training sessions is associated with an increased frequency of sprains, with the main contributing factors being the unpreparedness of players with fewer training sessions and overtraining among those with a higher number of training sessions. The study also reveals that physiotherapy and rehabilitation are often neglected, with a large number of athletes not undergoing an adequate rehabilitation process, which increases the risk of recurrent injuries. Psychological aspects of recovery also play an important role, with many athletes feeling insecure when returning to the field. The results highlight the need for improved prevention, a systematic approach to rehabilitation, and better education for athletes and coaching staff to reduce the incidence of injuries and enhance safety in handball. This research suggests the importance of further studies that could provide additional insights into the influence of various factors on the occurrence of ankle sprains and offer guidelines for improving the quality and availability of physiotherapy in the First Croatian Handball League.
