The Achilles tendon is anatomically special because it forms a functional connection through the muscles of the gastrocnemius (m.gastrocnemius) and soleus (m.soleus). The incidence of tendinopathy has been increasing in the last 30 to 40 years due to increasing participation of people in sports and physical activities. Tendons are exposed to mechanical stress on a daily basis. There are different types of treatment for tendinopathy, and nowadays non-surgical methods of treatment are gaining the most popularity. Often, instead of the name tendinopathy, the name tendon overexertion syndrome is used, in which due to long-term mechanical pressure and tendon overexertion, microtraumatic injuries add up, which eventually overcome the reparative abilities of the tendon. The Achilles tendon receives blood from the muscular-tendon junction and the bony-tendon junction but the main source of blood are the vessels from paratenon. When excessive, repeated loading overcomes the ability of repairing the tendon, it causes an inflammatory reaction and inflammation of the Achilles tendon occurs. The main symptom of Achilles tendon tendinopathy is pain that occurs gradually and is associated with stressful activity. Pain is typically activity-related and occurs at the beginning of activity, during activity, at the end of activity and throughout activity in the advanced stage of the disease. As with all treatments of overexertion syndrome, Achilles tendon tendinopathy is aimed at relieving pain, controlling the inflammatory reaction promoting the healing process, and complete rehabilitation and prevention of further damage.
