The McKenzie method was named after its developer, Robin McKenzie, a New Zeland physical therapist. He developed a set of exercises for the prevention and treatment of back pain. This system encompasses assessment, diagnosis and treatment. The symptoms are divided into 3 subgruops of spinal pathology: Postural Syndrome, Dysfunction Syndrome and Dearangment Syndrome which is the most common treatment classification. There are also other symptoms which do not fall into mechanical syndromes. Each subgruop corresponds to a specific mechanical procedure, the aim of which is the elimination of symptoms and increase in spinal mobility and musculature strenghtening. The method can also be used with the patients experiencing extremity pain, which are divided into 6 syndroms: Dearangment Syndrome, Articular Disorder, Contractile Dysfunction, Postural Syndrome, Spinal and other syndromes. Early intervention and active patient involment are a vital part of problem elimination. Symptom elimination is achieved through individualised treatment programs.
